To say I was excited to know that Dan Brown was going to make
an appearance at the Sharjah International Book Fair 2014 was an understatement.
I was SO thrilled! That was the day I finally understood the hype amongst people
when they queue up for hours just for an autograph or a picture with their
favourite celebrity and the lengths that one can go to just for one
glimpse.
Moreover I hadn’t ever had a
chance prior to that to meet someone famous.
I remember the evening clearly –
how despite arriving early enough, being stuck and jostled in a thick crowd and
feeling slightly claustrophobic for what felt like hours, only to not be able
to even
see him.
Sigh. A bit too good
to be true after all.
Anyhow, I wanted to share why I absolutely love his novels
so much. I have read all six books which are: Angels & Demons (the first
book I ever read of his where I was captured by his writing), Deception Point,
Digital Fortress, Inferno, The Lost Symbol and lastly but possibly the most
famous of all, The Da Vinci Code.
I have a penchant for thrillers, suspense and mystery novels. His' are
like fact and fiction rolled into one interesting page turner of a book. The
novels are research intensive because the setting and documents referred to are
real and when described in the book, are so rich in detail, that you seem to be
walking the same path and admiring Leonardo Da Vinci’s painting for the quirky
little details that most seem to miss.
My personal favourite theme that run through the books is
where the grey area between science and religion is explored because it is
quite thought provoking. It’s a bit of an introspection really, to be asking
yourself the same questions regarding the basis and strength of your faith and
purpose. Characters are so multi-dimensional that sometimes the line between a
hero and a villain can be seemingly blurry, because they have all rationalised
their actions and are carrying it out for the greater good. Their reasoning and
the religious and scientific ideas and facts mentioned really hit me to explore
these things for myself, to re visit the ideas that I have of the world as it
may be.
All in all, I would definitely recommend everyone to read at
least one book of his. It is pure joy to be going through the plot and trying
to solve the mystery whilst learning so much on the way. I strongly believe it
will impact your perspective and broaden your thinking, as it did for me.
Happy reading :)
